Chargers End Season With Loss to BHC in Region IV Sectional

Black Hawk jumped to a big early lead and went on to defeat the Carl Sandburg College baseball team 8-4 to finish off a sweep of the Chargers in their best-of-three Region IV tournament sectional Sunday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The No. 5 seed Braves advance to next weekend’s Region IV finals. The fourth-seeded Chargers finish with a 29-14 record in a season that saw them earn a share of their first Arrowhead Conference championship since 2008.

Key Moments
- Black Hawk, playing as the home team, scored once in the bottom of the first and opened up a 6-0 lead with a five-run second. A single by Chris Liggett brought home one run, and Sam Stronskas and Stephen Pim each added two-run singles in the frame.
- Sandburg got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Braves got one of those back in the bottom half as Liggett scored from second on a groundout to second base.
- Trailing 8-3 in the eighth, Chargers leadoff man Braedon Blackford (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) and center fielder Payton Hartbank (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon) opened the inning with hard-hit singles, but the Braves limited the damage to just one run as the next three batters were retired in order on a flyout, RBI fielder’s choice and a strikeout.
Sandburg Star of the Game
Sophomore lefthander Jack Gray (Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) kept the Chargers in the game after coming on in relief in the second inning. Gray pitched the final 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on just three hits and two walks while striking out five.
